I use social contracts in the classroom all the time. They lay out the general expectations of how we agree each other, and what happens when we get off track. I hadn't thought of applying them to partner relationships, but I suppose they could work in the same fashion. When cool heads agree to certain things and resolutions, there's already a plan for dealing with conflict and a division of assets, should that need arise.
